It's official, folks. The NFL begins next week. This weekend, the NFL's roster trimming deadline came to pass. Team dynamics experienced a final shift, and there were even some genuinely surprising moves that we'll take a look at today, plus more.
Let's get into it, shall we?
Shocking Last Minute Roster Cuts
Typically, by the roster cutdown deadline, most of the major moves have already been made. That said, it's not unusual for each season to produce a surprise or two.
That happened yesterday in the form of Will Levis, quarterback for the Titans. Tennessee waived their 2023 second-round draft pick per his own request. Levis is reportedly looking for a spot on a roster where he can make more of an impact.
We've also seen an organizational pivot orchestrated by the New York Giants, this in the form of Evan Neal being released following a poor preseason performance. We also saw Johnny Hekker of the Vikings get released as a cost-cutting move.
As a reminder, folks, just because a player has been trimmed from one roster doesn't mean they can't have an excellent season on another one.
The Return of Aaron Donald
Aaron Donald is, without question, a future Hall of Fame inductee. After announcing his retirement, he shocked the world of football with a lucrative, even if short-term, deal.
Donald has signed a $20 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams. There he'll play a critical role in the interior defensive line, where he'll work beside Miles Garrett.
Commissioners Exempt List
For those that don't know, the Commissioner's Exempt List is used for players who are facing legal issues, or are otherwise being investigated by the league for personal conduct reasons. The players still receive their salaries, but are barred from all aspects of team life, including practice and games.
During that period, teams are able to sign a replacement player while the person being investigated is processed.
Obviously, for many of us, this sounds a lot like an extremely friendly paid time-off arrangement, but the consequences can be significant, depending on the findings of the investigation.
Two players added their names to the Commissioner's list. The first was Josh Jacobs of the Packers. Jacobs was placed on the Commissioner's list following an arrest in Brown County, Wisconsin for battery and property damage.
Jonathan Cooper of the Broncos is in a similar position, following domestic violence allegations. This latter decision may have significant ramifications for Denver, who will be without their prime edge rusher for the start of the season.
