Happy Friday, folks. As a reminder, this weekend we'll briefly cut away from our NFL coverage to take a look at what's going on in the MLS.
For right now, we're still focused on the National Football League, particularly as the cut deadline approaches.
Pretty soon, though, full unbridled NFL coverage will be coming your way when the league officially begins on Wednesday, September 9th. For now, let's see what last-minute news the league has in store for us.
Roster Cut Deadline
We've mentioned it a few times in our weekly newsletter. As a reminder—the cut deadline is coming this Sunday, August 30th, at 6 p.m. Expect last-minute roster tweaks right up until the last moment.
While the rosters are primarily settled at this point, there's always a little wiggle room, especially coming down the final stretch.
College Return Rule
A Dallas judge has made a ruling that will have a genuine impact on college football. This came in the form of a temporary restraining order, which blocks the SEC and the NCAA from punishing schools that try to sign players currently on an NFL roster.
It's a complicated ruling in that it contradicts the current league stance concerning eligibility.
Presently, any NFL player who returns to college is considered completely ineligible to play in 2026. How this rule will actually play out remains to be seen.
A Keener Focus on Mental Health
The way the NFL handles its players' physical and mental needs is continuously under examination. We've covered studies showing alarmingly high rates of CTE in football players who have died within the last decade.
As the league focuses more on physical safety, there's evidence of an increased emphasis on mental health as well. The Behavioral Health Network is a revolutionary mental health clinic available to the football community.
It's 100% free—not that price sensitivity is a huge concern amongst players within the league—but more importantly, it's also off-site, confidential, and entirely independent of the league itself. This means that players and their families can seek mental health services without shame.
Professional sports have long come under fire for failing to prioritize mental health. This move is a big step forward not just for NFL players, but for the people who look up to them.
