It's Thursday. The week is winding down, but NFL news is not. The league has made a major announcement concerning the future of the Pro Bowl.
We'll cover that today along with some looks at a few roster shakeups and injury reports. Let's get into it, folks.
No More Pro-Bowl?
The NFL has announced officially that they will be discontinuing the Pro Bowl game starting this year. They are retaining the Pro Bowl game classification, meaning 88 players will still be distinguished based on fan, player, and coach voting. It's simply the game itself that has been discontinued.
The league is instead shifting its focus to on-site player celebrations and even flag football activations in LA. This move is seen to be done to develop the popularity of flag football, which is set to make its Olympic debut in 2028.
The decision to cut the Pro Bowl is multifaceted. For one thing, interest in the game has been lagging for years. Players themselves have historically put in low effort for the simple reason that it is strictly an exhibition game.
The game itself was often diluted through replacements as well. While many people were named as Pro Bowl contenders, players who were injured or preserving their health for the Super Bowl would typically decline.
The update won't break many hearts. Professional sports, even beyond the NFL, typically don't impress on the All-Star stage for these very reasons. That said, it's certainly an adjustment.
Record Breaking Sale
NFL owners voted unanimously to allow the Seattle Seahawks to be sold to the Khosla family.
The sale was for $9.6 billion, which, in case you were wondering, was record-breaking. It helps when the product you're selling won the Super Bowl last year, right?
Patrick Mahomes Is Back
Finally, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs has confirmed that he is on track to begin play in Week 1.
If all things go as planned, Mahomes will face off against the Denver Broncos exactly nine months after he tore his ACL and LCL. Mahomes will still be sitting for the remainder of the preseason.
