Happy Wednesday, folks. We're now officially one week away from regular-season play. As the league heads into the regular season, many fans are naturally excited. Even with that being the case, there's still time for controversy, including a surprising story involving league golden boy Tony Romo.

In this newsletter, we take a look at where the NFL stands seven days from kickoff and examine how emerging legal complications might impact the season.

Josh Jacobs was placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List after his May arrest. The Packers GM, Brian Gutekunst, has noted a lack of surveillance footage of the incident in question as part of why decisive action has yet to be taken. However, they do have a contingency plan in the form of running back Kaleb Johnson as a backup.

Jonathon Cooper was also placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List, again for domestic violence allegations.

Possibly the most surprising development, however, was a news story involving Tony Romo. Romo, of course, has not suited up since 2017. However, he remains very active and visible in the football community and has long been noted for his polite demeanor and general lack of controversy.

Many fans were surprised to learn that Romo was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence last July. The former quarterback has now pled no contest to the charge and is on leave from CBS Sports.

In an official statement, Romo referenced lingering pain from his professional football days, stating that this discomfort has led to a regrettable dependence on drugs and alcohol.

Players sacrifice their bodies for the sport they love. Too often, the consequences of that go underreported.

It's been a fun few weeks digging up stories in the preseason and reporting them here. That said, once regular-season play officially begins next Wednesday, the newsletter is going to have a very different look.
