It’s officially the first week of the preseason. The games aren’t always a thrill a minute, but they do provide a much desired window into what can be expected for the rest of the season.

Today, we’ll take a look at some preseason action and speculate wildly on what it could mean for the rest of the year.

A Preseason Preview

It’s kickoff time!

The preseason offers fans a mixed experience. On the one hand, it’s our first look at a long awaited product. When last we met our heroes it was February. The world was enraged—or enthralled depending on the person—by the Super Bowl halftime show. Snow was on the ground and the lush green just beyond your window felt more mythic than real.

In other words, it’s been awhile.

For all that anticipation, the product itself is….eh. Teams don’t bring their A game. The sessions are meant as much as anything, to evaluate possibilities. Wins are nice, when they come, but that’s not exactly the goal.

Here’s an example. Bo Nix is sitting out for the Broncos in their preseason opener against Atlanta. Sean Peyton is using the preseason to test the depth of his bench.

Lamar Jackson is sitting for the same reason.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be excited. There are six games tonight. Many of them, maybe all of them, will feature plays and matchups that you won’t see any other time of year. Just remember that the best football is still ahead of us.

Injury Report

Not everyone will be suiting up tonight.

We’ve been covering training camp injuries for the last two weeks. Unfortunately, they keep coming in.

Isiah Pacheco is out of action for the foreseeable future. The starting running back tore his MCL during practice.

We’re also not going to be seeing Bryan Bresee this season. The defensive tackle tore his ACL during practice yesterday.

Finally, Laremy Tunsil’s season is also in jeopardy. The Commanders left tackle suffered a torn triceps injury. It’s unclear when he will return.

These are, of course, tough breaks. They are also good reminders for why teams don’t go full throttle during the off-season.
