We’re about one month from first kick off. That hasn’t kept a steady trickle of NFL related news stories from coming in.

In today’s newsletter, we will give you a short preview of what to expect this season. Read on for tales from training camp, some players worth paying special attention to, and more.

Tales From Training Camp

Football can be dangerous—even during practice. Atlanta Falcons fans were reminded of this in the worst possible way with the announcement that Jalon Walker tore his ACL during practice.

Walker will miss the entire coming season, putting significant pressure on the team’s secondary and young interior depth. We’ll see, as the season progresses, how this development impacts props. For now, we wish Walker a speedy recovery.

As preseason prep proceeds, we’re also getting a better idea of the Raiders’ offensive strategy. Coach Klint Kubiab has made it clear that No. 1 overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza will not take first team reps over veteran QB Kirk Cousins.

Vegas likely intends to introduce Mendoza to the league gradually, as often happens even with very talented QBs.

Players To Watch This Season

Naturally, any NFL player can be worth paying attention to. In this section, we will regularly highlight players deserving extra special attention.

Today, its the Indiana Colts corner, Justin Walley. Walley missed his entire rookie season due to an ACL injury. Walley’s return to camp has made him the talk of training camp.

The Colts let Nick Cross walk during free agency. That, along with Walley’s size and coverage instincts position him well to take on a serious role this year.

Schedule Preview

The schedule is out, and it already has fans talking. Today, we’ll take a look at what the Detroit Lions will be getting themselves into at the start of the season.

Currently, the Lions have one of the softest starting schedules out there. Let’s take a look:

  • Week 1: vs. New Orleans Saints

  • Week 3: vs. New York Jets

  • Week 4: @ Carolina Panthers

  • Week 5: @ Arizona Cardinals

Week two will test their metal a little with a road game against the Buffalo Bills. Otherwise, it’s about as soft a start as a team could hope for.

There are pros and cons to an easy start. On the one hand, it helps teams find their stride while still developing a good record. The flip side? An easy way in means a hard way out. The Lions will want to make sure they’re sharp for the second half of what could be a difficult end to the season.
