Happy Thursday, folks. The week is winding down. Soon we can all honestly say that we're in the first week of real NFL activity.

In the weeks that come, our newsletter will pivot into a decidedly more props-oriented direction. The occasional news story will certainly still find its way in the inbox, but the emphasis of Props Guru is and will always be on helping fans identify value and understand how dynamic on- and off-field conditions can impact probability.

In today's newsletter, we're going to examine how our platform works and what kind of communications you can expect in the future.

Our Mission

It's important to understand that when we feature individual player props or parlays on our page, blog, socials, or newsletter, we are not endorsing an outcome, but highlighting potential value.

In other words, we're saying, "Hey, look, the price on this prop looks a little off. Here's why."

The actual outcome itself? To that, we can only speculate.

Typically, in our featured bets or parlay sections of the newsletter, we will explain through which logic we find a particular prop to be supportable. Sometimes you may even find us saying that the odds of a certain outcome are limited, but the value makes up for that fact.

Keep in mind that in the world of sports betting, the goal is usually not to win the maximum number of bets. It's to stack high-quality wins. Several well-priced props that go the right way will typically beat a more significant number of props with a tiny margin.

What Factors Influence NFL Props?

There are several core considerations that contribute to the probability of a prop coming to fruition. Like most sports, the recency of information is of great importance.

Same-day injury reports, for example, can change lines significantly, and often in more ways than you might consider at a glance. It's not just that a player on reduced minutes due to an injury will have his stat lines impacted. It's also the people working around them.

Injuries in the NFL, possibly more than other sports, can change the game plan pretty considerably. It's important to think about how one player's absence or presence impacts the entire team dynamic.

It's also good to think about factors that impact the setting itself. What team is home or away? What is the weather like? A rainy field, for example, or one that is slowly getting covered with snow, can significantly influence the game script.

Take into consideration also the influence of recent performance trends and matchup history. Athletes exist in a complex ecosystem of activity. The reason prop betting is often so much harder than you expect it to be is because the number of inputs that need to be accounted for is so high.

The Role of Narratives

Keep in mind that prop pricing is not always based exclusively on the likelihood of the outcome from a statistical standpoint. There are also relevant inputs that come in the form of outside bettor activity.

For this, there are two separate groups worth considering. The first is often referred to as sharp money.

Sharp betting groups approach wagers with a level of precision similar to that of a hedge fund. They have data scientists, software engineers, and professional analysts at their disposal. Even with all of those resources, by the way, they still often lose, but their activity is typically weighed, at least by sportsbooks, more heavily than the betting impulse of the general public.

Which isn't to say that Joe Schmo can't move a line. Often he will. However, price adjustments that follow from general population betting activity, at least in cases where all other things are equal, typically come as a consequence of intuition.

In other words, Joe Schmo and all of his friends have a strong but minimally informed feeling about how a player will perform on a given night. The books will still move in response to this activity as a way of managing their own risk, but unless the narrative is being driven by something concrete, for example, an emerging news story concerning an injury or a suspension, it's something that you can most likely ignore.
